Pressure metered dose inhalers (pMDI)

Compared with the ordinary oral preparation, the inhalation preparation of the drug can directly reach the absorption or action site, the absorption effect is fast, can avoid the first-pass effect of the liver, reduce the dosage of the drug, improve the bioavailability; compared with the injection preparation, it can reduce the mechanical damage of the local tissues, to reduce or avoid some of the adverse effects of the drug, and to improve the patient's adherence.

Inhalation formulations are those in which the drug is delivered to the respiratory tract and/or lungs as a mist by a specific device for local or systemic action.

Commonly used inhalation devices are pressure metered dose inhalers (pMDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI), soft mist inhalers (SMI), and small volume nebulizers (SVN)



Pressurized Quantitative Inhaler

They are also commonly referred to as pressure dosing inhalers. Their inhaler devices are called dosing compression devices, such as Ventolin, Mastocycline, Acetonel, Bicolone, Coxsone, and Pulmicort.

How to use an aerosol device, using Ventolin (Salbutamol) as an example

Usage:

① Open the lid and shake well (shake more than ten times).

② Exhale vigorously.

③Put the nozzle into your mouth and wrap your lips around the nozzle.

④Press down and inhale deeply.

⑤Remove the nozzle and hold your breath as long as possible for 10 seconds.

⑥Exhale slowly at the end.


Note ⚠️: Breathing slowly and deeply while pressing the administration button allows the medication to reach the lungs better.
