How to Choose a Male External Catheter

A practical guide for patients, caregivers, and distributors.

Male External Catheter Guide

What is a male external catheter?

A male external catheter, also called a condom catheter, is a sheath worn externally over the penis to collect urine into a drainage bag. It is a non-invasive alternative to indwelling catheters for men with urinary incontinence, mobility limitations, or post-surgical needs.

How to choose the right size

Measure the circumference of the penis at its widest point, near the base, while flaccid. Compare the measurement with the manufacturer's sizing chart. Typical ranges are small (about 25–30 mm), medium (about 30–37 mm), large (about 37–45 mm), and extra-large (45 mm+). If you are between sizes, choose the slightly looser fit for comfort and circulation, but not so loose that it leaks.

Adhesive vs non-adhesive styles

Adhesive-style catheters use a skin-friendly adhesive strip to hold the sheath in place and are commonly changed about every 24 hours. Non-adhesive styles may be changed more frequently based on need. Change immediately if you notice leakage, skin irritation, redness, or any sign of skin breakdown.

Materials and skin safety

DSB Medical offers latex-free male external catheters made from latex-free synthetic materials, designed for patients with sensitive skin or latex allergies. Always clean and dry the skin before application and inspect the skin daily.

Caregiver checklist

  • Check the skin for redness or irritation at every change.
  • Keep the drainage bag below the level of the bladder.
  • Empty the bag regularly and follow the product instructions.
  • Ensure the sheath is not twisted or kinked after application.

OEM / ODM supply

DSB Medical supports OEM (private label) and ODM (design) manufacturing for male external catheters. Distributors, brands, and institutions can source products under their own branding with manufacturing, quality, and regulatory compliance handled by DSB.
